What type of school is better? Liberal Arts or Research?

I'm trying to decide if I should apply to any Liberal Arts Colleges. I want a medium size school with a lot of opportunities and an open curriculum and I'm hoping to go into medicine/focus on the natural sciences. Would liberal arts colleges suit my needs, or are research national universities better?
