Need rigging help (Maya)?

ok, I'm trying to rig a character I modeled in Maya 2012, but I forgot exactly how to do everything....my problem is when I move his arm up, polygons (not even attached to arm) move out with the arm. How can I keep everything else intact when i move his arm up? I believe it has something to do with weight shading, I can't remember. Any help is appreciated....
